More Spines!

Just scribbling away, anticipating the big weekend of writing to come! These little Thumbtoons really help me prepare. Sometimes I need to see a character and capture a bit of their essence before committing them to the page. Obviously, the Mr. Spines in the book series is a much less "cartoony" character. But, here I've captured some of his expressions and mannerisms.

I've been considering publishing a sketchbook with all of the doodles I've accumulated while writing the Mysterious Mr. Spines trilogy. Perhaps something to do after the third book comes out...

Spines

The Mysterious Mr. Spines from WINGS.

Chuckles the Mad Gnome

Chuckles the Gnome is the terror of well manicured lawns everywhere! Squirrels beware!

This is an exceptionally small Thumbtoon: only about 3/4" high!

Working size

Here's a photo I snapped with my phone (sorry for the poor picture quality) to show the average size of the thumbnail sketches.

Cap'n Curmudgeon

Here's a bunch of tiny doodles of the old sea salt and the love of his life: his boat, "Trudy". I don't really know why I started doing these thumbnails yesterday. Guess I was feeling homesick for the sea... Average thumbnail size on these sketches is about 2" square. The sketches of the Cap'n are about a half inch to an inch high.
